The six-wheeled Tyrrell P34 raced in Formula 1 in 1976 and 1977. The designers' idea was simple - reduce the height of the front wheels to improve aerodynamics, and increase their number to maintain the total contact patch with the surface. In practice, it turned out even cooler: Derek Gardner, an engineer at the Tyrrell team, implemented the idea so that the contact area of the front of the car with the road increased by 40% compared to the traditional scheme, the front brakes became �grittier� by 25%, and most importantly - a gain in aerodynamics made it possible to level out the lag of 50 hp that the Cosworth engine had before the Ferrari.
